Ukrainian riot police, Berkut, took the side of the protesters in a number of regional centres.

Oleksandr Demidov, the police chief in Chernivtsi, said to protesters in front of the regional administration that “the police of Bukovina are with people”, TVi reports.

The protesters met the statement with applause and chanted “Police with people”.

A similar case took place in Ternopil. Berkut officers marched through the city centre, stopped before thousands of demonstrators in the central square and apologised for performing illegal orders, Tsenzor.NET informs.

Law-enforcement officers from Lutsk expressed solidarity with the protesters and took their side on Wednesday, February 19. The information comes from local police chief Vasili Marchishak, Volyn Post writes.

A column of protesters marched to the city's main police department at 11:40. The police chief came to the demonstrators and said the police surrendered. “The police don't want conflicts and take the side of people,” Marchishak said.
