Domracheva refuses to carry flag at Olympics opening ceremony

Carrying Lukashenka's flag during the Olympics opening ceremony is a bad sign.

Belarusian biathlete Darya Domracheva refused to carry the official flag during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Sochi.

The leader of the women's biathlon team told it to Russia 2 TV channel.

“I was offered to carry the flag at the opening ceremony. Of course, it's a great honour for me. But our coaches and I decided not to take part in the ceremony. Even before the offer to carry the flag was made, we didn't plan to participate in the event. I have a practice session the next day and a race in two days,” Domracheva said.

Freestyle skier Alexei Grishin, Belarus's first and only Winter Olympic champion, was announced on February 4 to carry the national flag during the Opening Ceremony of the 22nd Winter Olympics in Sochi. The decision was taken by Lukashenka, Tribuna writes.

Only one flag bearer showed good results at the Olympic Games in the history of independent Belarus. It was tennis player Max Mirnyi. He and Victoria Azarenka became champions at the London 2012 Olympics.
