Deputy director of Vitebskenergo company arrested

An official from Vitebsk used state's funds to build a private house.

The Investigation Committee opened a criminal case against a deputy director of Vitebskenergo, an energy company. He is suspected of abusing power at his previous work, Interfax-West news agency has learnt Monday from the Investigation Committee's press department.

“Investigators have found that the person, then the director of an agricultural company in the Vitebsk region, used funds and construction materials, which were provided for the construction of the company's facilities, for his personal purposes,” the committee informs.

“The criminal case was opened in connection with the results of the check carried out by the economic crime department of the interior department of the Vitebsk regional executive committee and the Vitebsk district interior department,” the committee adds.

“The materials of the criminal case show that the contracting company, which carried out construction and installation works at the agricultural company, simultaneously constructed a house for the official using the funds and construction materials, which were supposed to be used for the company. He also signed the documents to apply a multiplying ratio to pay the construction company from the funds of his company,” the investigation committee informs.

“The illegal activity of the director resulted in large-scale damage to the agricultural company. So far, the investigators estimate the damage at more than 10 billion Belarusian rubles,” the committee says.

The official was charged with abusing power (part 3 of article 424 of the Criminal Code of Belarus).

“His property worth 600 million rubles was seized. He has been taken into custody. The investigation goes on,” the investigation committee says.
