Ukrainian political scientist: In Russia they are developing new conflict scenario

Yanukovych’s latest statement puts on alert.

This is how a political observer of the Ліга.net portal Serhiy Vysotskiy commented for the charter97.org web-site on Yanukovych’s Rostov-on-Don statement.

“Yanukovych repeated that he remained a legitimate president, but there was a new detail that he still remained the Supreme Commander of the armed forces. It seems to me that this speaks of the development of some escalation scenario aimed at providing for another reason to legitimize the possible military intervention in Ukraine. This means either the intervention that has by fact been carried out into the Crimea, or a possible intervention in the Eastern regions”, - the expert believes.

At the same time the political scientist added that it is yet unknown, whether this would be implemented.

“I personally really do not want a war, and I cannot even let myself think that even one of my fellow countrymen dies. But on the other hand, I understand that if Ukraine becomes the theater for a battle between Russian and the Western world, this will lead to a total collapse of Russia and the Putin regime. That is why rationally I do not see how he can start an open intervention now, but on the other hand, Yanukovych’s statements, of course, put me on alert”, - Serhiy Vysotskiy concluded.

We would remind that Russia’s president Vladimir Putin claimed that the toppled Ukraine’s president Viktor Yanukovych did not have political future. The statement was made at a press-conference in Novo-Ogarevo near Moscow on 4 March. Putin added that in Ukraine Yanukovych could have gotten killed had he not fled the country. According to him, Russia provided the former president with a shelter due to humanitarian reasons.
