Yarmoshyna complains about election boycott

The chairwoman of the Central Election Committee (CEC) says the Belarusians don't want to participate in elections.

Citizens were “rather passive” at the first stage of the election campaign, Lidzia Yarmoshyna said during an online conference on the BelTA website.

“Most of people applying to the Central Election Committee try to solve their personal problems. We still meet this old attitude: We don't go to elections until you solve our problems. I can say that the time, when we tried to persuade people to participate in elections, has passed,” the CEC head said. She emphasised that participation in the election is the personal, permanent and undeniable right of a citizen. Citizens can use it or not, no matter if their problems were settled or not, Narodnaya Volia reports.

Lidzia Yarmoshyna said the election campaign couldn't interfere with the work of government bodies, let alone courts.

“We sometimes receive materials of civil cases. There are special procedures and legislation that bear no relation to the electoral legislation. We cannot help such people,” the CEC head noted.
