Stanislau Shushkevich: Putin is primitive lawyer

The first head of independent Belarus comments on the Russian president's remarks.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin said in a phone conversation with Mustafa Dzhemilev, an Ukrainian MP and former chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, that it was debatable whether Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union was legal.

According to Putin, the self-declaration of Ukraine's independence didn't fully comply with the Soviet procedures of the secession from the USSR.

In 1991 in Viskuli, presidents of Russia Boris Yeltsin, president of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk and chairman of the Supreme Council of Belarus Stanislau Shushkevich made a decision to dissolve the Soviet Union and set up the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Radio Svaboda reports.

Stanislau Shushkevich, who signed the Belavezha Accords, comments on the statement of Russian president Vladimir Putin regarding the secession of Ukraine from the USSR.

– Nobody would have quit the Soviet Union if we had fulfilled those Soviet laws. All understood it perfectly. But lawyers, who analysed the Belavezha Accords, excellent lawyers and independent commissions, called the accords a masterpiece of legitimate diplomacy of the late second millennium. They said it was a legitimate agreement, under which Ukraine de jure quit the USSR. This little lawyer Putin, a professional spy, tries to fins some loopholes.

He has the right to do so if he doesn't want to know other approaches and delicate legal issues. Zealous communists say so. If he calls the dissolution of the USSR a tragedy of the Soviet people, why doesn't he call GULAG camps, millions of killed and imprisoned people a tragedy? This is a typical communistic, military, rabid approach of a primitive lawyer. It cannot be taken otherwise. He'd better surf the Internet, read the agreement to set up the Commonwealth of Independent States and read what professionals, real lawyers, not trimmers like Putin, wrote.

– Why does Putin make these statements now?

– He wants to add Crimea to Transnistria and Abkhazia. He wants Russia to make the whole world nervous over its military approaches. It's clear. He lack talents, knowledge and wisdom to make the life of the Russians better. The country with huge incomes from oil exports and with a third of its population living in poverty can exist only with such heads as Putin.

– Can Putin review the Belavezha Accords?

– He will never manage to do it. It was ratified by the Russian parliament, the Supreme Council. The Russian Duma already took a decision to denounce the Belavezha Accords. But the entire world said they were crazy. It was just a political reaction to the events. It has no legal power. I'd like Putin to read how the Duma made that decision on the initiative of the LDPR party.
