The Russian MFA accuses supporters of Ukraine's territorial integrity of clashes in Donetsk.
The statement published on the Ministry's website says the people criticising the current Ukrainian authorities were attacked by “right-wing radical groups”. The MFA says Russia reserves the right to protect its “fellow citizens and compatriots” in Ukraine.
“Tragic events happened in Donetsk on March 13, 2014, and blood was shed,” the statement said. “Armed right-wing radical groups attacked peaceful demonstrators, who wanted to express their attitude towards the destructive position of people who named themselves as the Ukrainian authorities. As a result of the clashes, one person died and many people were injured.
We said repeatedly that those who came to power in Kiev, should disarm rioters and ensure security of the population and their legal right to assemblies. Unfortunately, the events in Ukraine show this is not happening. The Kiev authorities don't control the situation in the country.
Russia realises its responsibility for the lives of fellow citizens and compatriots in Ukraine and reserves the right to protect these people.”
Clashes in Donetsk took place yesterday. Separatists and people from Russia, armed with knives, bats and pepper spray projectiles, attacked supporters of Ukraine.
TSN reports about many people with head and eye injuries. Some were hit by metal bars. A Donetsk resident, 22, died in an ambulance on the way to a hospital. He received a lethal stab wound for coming to a rally for united Ukraine.
The death toll rose to 3 in the morning. Scores are reported to have injuries.
