Polish general: NATO should strengthen eastern borders

The chief of the National Security Bureau of Poland, Stanislaw Koziej, thinks the events in Ukraine is the beginning of a new cold war between Russia and the West.

It is reported by Polskie Radio.

The general stresses the large-scale economic and diplomatic conflict resembling the one of the 1970s is unlikely. The chief of the National Security Bureau thinks there's no direct military threat to Poland, but such a probability cannot be ruled out in the long term. The current situation suggests that NATO strengthen its eastern borders.

The 32nd air base of the tactical squadron in Lask, where F-16 jets are stationed, continues to play the key role in Poland's defence.

According to UNIAN, on March 1, the Federation Council of Russia unanimously approved the proposal of Russian president Vladimir Putin to use troops in Ukraine. Military personnel without insignia have been blocking and seizing military, border and government facilities in Crimea since February 27. The illegitimate authorities of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea held a referendum on March 16 and said almost 100% of voters voted for Crimea's joining Russia.
