Vitaly Portnikov: Putin can attack Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn

After the occupation of the Crimea Russia’s president can start an aggression against any European country.

The opinion came from an interview by a famous Ukrainian journalist Vitaly Portnikov that he gave to gordonua.com.

“As of today Putin has not used the right to send troops to Ukraine. Someone may object saying that he did not use that right in the Crimea as well, but the occupation of that part of Ukrainian land nevertheless took place. However, in the Crimea there was a completely different situation due to the fact that the Black Sea fleet’s base was there. In fact it turned out that the fleet was not so much a fleet as an occupation contingent, under the cover of which different force actions may occur”, - he said.

Vitaly Portnikov reminds that there are no more Russian military bases in the territory of Ukraine, while any other action on the part of Vladimir Putin will require a legal justification of the necessity to send troops.

“Anonymous troops do not cross borders with anonymous goals. In order to go to Kyiv, Donetsk or Kharkiv military machines and troops are needed. Now there simply exists no reason for Putin to give an order to his army in the legal domain. They are trying to provoke certain actions in Donetsk and Lugansk in order to justify the aggression, while there is no even that in Kyiv.

In theory one may imagine anything. Putin may attack Kyiv, Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn, Vienna, Warsaw or Prague with the same success. After the occupation of the Crimea Russia’s president may start an aggression against any European country, but an attack on Kyiv does not look justified from the legal and military point of view even for Putin”, - Vitaly Portnikov claimed.

We would remind that yesterday in Moscow Russia’s president Vladimir Putin and the self-proclaimed representatives of Crimean authorities – the “head of the government” Sergey Aksyonov, the speaker of the Crimean parliament, dismissed by the Supreme Council, Vladimir Konstantinov and the “mayor” of Sevastopol Aleksey Chaliy signed an agreement, according to which the Crimea and Sevastopol joined Russia as new territories. After that Russian occupants started attacking Ukrainian military units in the Crimea.
