Belarusian MFA “deeply concerned”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus released a cautious statement on the joining of Crimea to Russia.

The statement says Belarus cannot stay indifferent to the events in Ukraine, including the referendum in Crimea on March 16 and the following decision on Crimea's accession to the Russian Federation, BelaPAN reports.

“Belarus, Russia and Ukraine are fraternal states who have many centuries of common history. External forces have made repeated attempts to play on the contradictions between us and use them in their self interests,” the statement says.

Belarus is “deeply concerned” about the “attempts by some politicians, who are in fact far from the developments in the region, to decide what is good and what is bad for our Slavic peoples”.

According to the statement, “given today's realities” Belarus stands against “the lopsided, biased interpretation of the principles of international law for the sake of geopolitical interests, to the attempts to claim that some international situations and territories are special cases and to ignore others”.

“To theorize about this today is to put the problem into a deadlock,” the MFA says.

“Belarus will make every possible effort to help Ukraine and Russia to restore their brotherly and good-neighborly relations and settle all the contradictions and avoid military confrontation,” the statement reads.
