Ukraine rejects CIS chairmanship

Ukraine has decided not to continue its chairmanship in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) this year.

The statement was made by the Ukrainian MFA's spokesman Yevhen Perebiynis at a briefing on March 19, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

“The Ukrainian side has made a decision not to continue its chairmanship in the CIS in 2014,” he said.

According to Yevhen Perebiynis, instead of fulfilling its main tasks, the CIS has become a “tool of implementing interests of certain CIS members, in particular the Russian Federation”. The MFA spokesman recalled that due to the situation in Crimea Ukraine insisted on adopting a statement by the CIS to condemn aggression. Kyiv assumed that the CIS was based on the principles of respect for sovereignty and integrity of borders. “Unfortunately, the latest events have proved the opposite,” the diplomat said.

Despite the fact that Ukraine was among the CIS founders, according to the Belavezha Accords of 1991, it has not ratified the CIS Charter, so it's not de jure a CIS member state.
