Pet wolf stays with old owners in Minsk

Pet wolf stays with old owners in Minsk

Minsk ecologists decided where the wolf, who was found in a private house in the city district Sukharava, will live.

The verdict was to leave the animal with the previous owner.

Minsk-Novosti new agency learnt from a senior official of the Minsk city committee on natural resources and environment, Mikalai Kozak, that the wolf's owner promised to create proper conditions for his pet.

“After the National Academy of Science issued a decision that it was a wolf, our specialists arrived to sort out the situation,” Kozak says. “Ecologists saw in what conditions the animal lived and made a report. The preliminary information was confirmed. The conditions were inappropriate for the wild animal: the wolf was chained like an ordinary dog. The owner didn't even build a normal dog run or a kennel.

The man had to visit the environment committee. He was fined 1.3 million rubles for animal welfare violations and failure to register the pet in the Ministry of Nature.

The owner admitted his guilt, promised to install a kennel for the wolf and invite the ecologists for a check.

Kozak say keeping wild animals as a pet is not prohibited. City residents can raise a raccoon or a fox, but only if they comply with the environmental legislation. A wolf must have a territory of at least 20 square metres.
