Yevhen Marchuk: Russia prepares provocations on Ukrainian border

A former defence minister of Ukraine says the Russian leadership won't allow holding the presidential election scheduled for May 25.

Yevhen Marchuk told RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service a serious provocation on the border could be organised before the election.

“It will again be initiated not by the Russian armed forces, but by so called 'fellow countrymen' from Ukraine. A small, not very violent conflict will take place. This time, it will have victims. The legitimacy of the presidential election will be undermined seriously both for Russia and western partners,” Yevhen Marchuk said.

Given this scenario, the Ukrainian authorities should call professionals to security services and other state agencies. The ex-defence minister praised the positive changes in the behaviour of the Ukrainian leadership: “The authorities woke up. The security and defnece sectors begin to show their teeth, in the good sense of the word.”
