Vital Rymasheuski: Milinkevich feeds authoritarianism

Recommencing a dialogue with Lukashenka by the EU is to become a disaster.

In this way the co-chairman of the organizing committee for creation of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party Vital Rymasheuski commented to charter97.org website the appeal of Aliaksandr Milinkevich to the EU to recommence the dialogue with the Belarusian authorities.

“It would be a serious mistake to cooperate with Lukashenka without democratic changes in Belarus. There are no positive steps toward democratization in the Belarusian society, and moreover, on the contrary, there is deterioration of the electoral laws and stepping up crackdown. The greater feebleness is shown by the West, the greater impunity is enjoyed by authoritarian regimes. And what is happening in Ukraine now is exactly the chance to draw a conclusion. This is exactly the result of Realpolitik and of cooperation with Putin. It order to prevent repetition of such a disaster in connection with Belarus, not Realpolitik, but a policy based on values should be pursued. It was my message in Brussels today, and it certainly contradicted the things Mr Milinkevich said,” he stressed.

The politician also disagrees the opinion of the chairman of For Freedom movement, that Dictator Lukashenka could become a mediator between Kyiv and Moscow.

“Any independence of Belarus in the foreign policy is out of the question now, despite any statements. There is probably certain autonomy of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, but it’s far from independence. That’s because all recent actions of the Belarusian regime had been Kremlin-run. Unfortunately, it’s a fact. And tomorrow we can lose even this situation. And only unity of the democratic forces based upon the basis of values and on a struggle with any demonstration of authoritarianism. Independent Belarusian politicians should not feed authoritarianism. Support of Lukashenka’s authoritarian regime could not be justified by the need to defend independence of Belarus from Russia. After that one may say that Putin should be supported in order to defend Russia’s independence from China and so on,” Vital Rymasheuski is convinced.

We remind that during the today’s discussion on the situation in Belarus at the session of the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly Euronest, the chairman of For Freedom movement Aliaksandr Milinkevich stated that a new window of opportunities could be opened for improving relations between the EU and Belarus, as it was in 2008.
