The ruler invited Yanukovych's supporters to Belarus.
Lukashenka said it on Friday talking to workers of the company Slutskiye Poyasa. Belarus is ready to receive the Ukrainians if they want to leave their country due to the current events, Interfax quotes him as saying.
“They want to come to us, I suppose. There is no way but to let some of our brothers and sisters in,” Lukashenka said. “We will see. We'll settle it if necessary.”
However, he noted: “It would be better if the situation was calm and quiet. It would be better both for us and for them.”
According to media and some Ukrainian sources, a number of people from former president Viktor Yanukovych's team hide in Belarus. The most famous of them are former interior minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko and oligarch Serhiy Kurchenko. They are suspected of committing crimes in Ukraine and put on the wanted list.
Head of the Communist Party of Ukraine Pyotr Symonenko, who fled the country after the new authorities came to power, was reported by the Belarusian media to be hiding in Minsk. However, he returned home later, after he had made sure he wouldn't be prosecuted.
Russian politicians supposed at one time Yanukovych could be granted asylum in Belarus.
