Ukrainian Foreign Ministry: Putin acknowledged illegitimacy of “referendum” in Crimea

The statements of Russian president have finally discredited legality of voting on the peninsula.

It is stated in the comment of the Informational policy department of the Interior Ministy of Ukraine referring to certain statements of Vladimir Putin during the question-and-answer session on Thursday, April 17.

“Inconsistence of the Russian’s side statements has finally discredits its position of alleged noninvolvement in the events in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and eastern Ukraine,” the report reads.

The foreign affairs ministry reminded that on March 4 Vladimir Putin categorically denied involvement of Russian servicemen in blocking Ukrainian army units in Crimea, but on April 17 he admitted that the so-called self-defence forces of Crimea were backed by Russian troops, who allegedly helped to hold a referendum.

“This confession of the Russian president has finally buried the story of a so-called “legitimate expression of will” by Crimean citizens. After that the next move of the Russian side should be acknowledgement of the undeniable fact that the referendum at the point of a gun of foreign troops, especially when this foreign state is interested in the results, has a clear name – annexation, with all its international legal effects,” the Foreign Ministry added.

Earlier Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk noted that Russian troops’ presence in eastern regions of Ukraine is acknowledged by the whole worlds except Russia’s leadership.
