Spy, detained in Poland, served in special forces brigade

The brigade, where Yury K. served, was a part of the Main Intelligence Directorate in the Soviet times.

Gazeta Wyborcza received a letter with a return address of prison in Rakowiecka Str., Warsaw. The author, Hrodna-based Belarusian Yury K. writes in bad Polish: “I appeal to you for help of the free media. I hope sincerely that you will find courage to carry out your own investigation and find the truth.”

He writes he served in the 5th Separate Special Forces Brigade in 2002-2003. The brigade is considered to be the most elite in the Belarusian armed forces. The brigade was a part of the Main Intelligence Directorate in the Soviet times.

Yury never hid where he had served there. “He was proud of his service in the special forces. He even boasted about it,” his friend says. His account on Odnoklassniki, a social networking site, contains many photos of Yury posing with different weapons.

On March 20, six days after the information appeared that two Belarusian spies had been caught (the other one, a diplomat, was deported), the Belarusian MFA said it “has information about two Belarusian citizens accused of espionage. The consul visited them, and they received the necessary consular assistance.”

The KGB does not comment on the issue.
