Catherine Ashton condemns shooting of Belarusian student

EU’s High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton “strongly condemned” the execution of Pavel Selyun, sentenced to death penalty.

Such a statement is published in the web-site of the European External Action Service, BelaPAN reports.

“The High Representative is conscious of the serious nature of the crimes for which he (Selyun) was convicted. However, she does not believe that capital punishment can ever be justified. The European Union opposes capital punishment under all circumstances”, - the EEAS quotes Ashton.

We would remind that the 23-year old Pavel Selyun was sentenced to death in June 2013 for murdering two people “with special cruelty”. Selyun appealed against the verdict. On 17 September 2013 it was considered by Supreme Court’s panel of judges chaired by Valer Kalinkovich, and kept the verdict in force.

In the statement Catherine Ashton urges Belarus to join a global moratorium on the death penalty as a first step towards its universal abolition.
