Two more oppositionists sentenced to arrests

Two activists of the Alternativa youth organization have been sentenced to administrative arrests.

In the evening on 22 April near Hiamiha metro station in Minsk police detained the organization’s information secretary Aliaksandr Sciepanienka and one of Minsk city affiliate’s coordinators Uladzimir Siarhiejeu.

Protocols were composed against the young men under the article 17.1 of the Administrative Code (disorderly conduct). On 23 April Minsk Central district court found the activists guilty and sentenced each of them to five days of arrests, BelaPAN reports.

The fate of the activists came up when journalist were speaking to the on-duty officer of the isolation center, when they tried to find the circumstances of the detention of a civic activist Illa Dabratvor on the same day.

Uladzimir Siarhiejeu was detained on his birthday after the festive meeting with friends and colleague had ended.

Alternativa’s leadership considers such actions of the authorities an attempt to intimidate active civil society members and also a way to prevent them from taking part in the approaching Chernobyl Shliakh-2014 manifestation.

We would remind that earlier a coordinator of the European Belarus civic campaign Maksim Viniarski was detained, who went on dry hunger strike in protest.
