Siarhei Antusevich: Lukashenka is the first to be dispossessed

The Belarusian ruler is the main official living beyond his means.

Siarhei Antusevich, deputy head of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions, spoke to charter97.org about the proposal of the Investigation Committee to seize property of wealthy officials.

“This is on what he came to power 20 years ago. The rhetoric has not changed since then, but, for some reasons, the number of corrupted officials hasn't reduced and sizes of bribes have grown. Despite Lukashenka's 'strict' measures to 'fight' against corruption, we see more corruption. It means that officials are not afraid of taking bribes and living beyond their means. Corruption is flourishing. Yes, we see show trials against corrupted officials from time to time, but they use the money, they stole, to compensate for the damage and leave jail early. So, it looks like a cheap show that we can watch again and again,” the trade union activist is confident.

“Applying the logic of the Investigation Committee, Lukashenka should be the first person to be dispossessed,” he noted.

“It could have been done in the 1990s, when an impeachment was possible. Now, it is physically impossible. We can see it from numerous attempts to initiate proceedings against Mr Lukashenka. They all ended in nothing,” Siarhei Antusevich added.
