“Chernobyl Way” to take place tomorrow

Participants of the rally are to gather near October cinema house at 4 p.m.

The protest march is authorized by the Belarusian authorities. The organisers of “Chernobyl’s Way” (Charnobylski Shlyakh) have received an answer from Minsk city executive committee, according to which the march is to take place along Independence Avenue and Surhanau Street up to the Park of Nation’s Friendship on April 26.

It has been decided to hold the rally under the slogan of defending Belarus from a nuclear threat from Russia.

“Chernobyl’s Way:” is a street rally which is held by the Belarusian opposition every year since 1988. It is a march which ends in a meeting of representatives of democratic forces. The year 2011 was an exception, as the city authorities banned the march for the first time, and authorized the meeting only.

We remind that on April 26, 1986 one of the largest nuclear catastrophes in the world took place, Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster. It touched upon every citizen of Belarus. As a result of the disaster, the fallout 300 times as large as the fallout of Hiroshima nuclear bombing was floating in the atmosphere.

More than 70% of the fallout settled down on the territory of Belarus. About 2 million citizens of our country were harmed by the consequences of the disaster, including more than 500,000 children. Scientists state that 200,000 Belarusians have already died of radioactive contamination in Belarus. The territory of Belarus has become an ecological catastrophe zone for many centuries.
