Obama: US to slap sanctions on Russia's banking and defence sectors

The US president has announced new sanctions against Russia.

US President Barack Obama said the United States would impose sanctions against sectors of Russia's economy.

The US president told it a press conference in Manila, RBC reports.

If Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine, the next phase could be “sectoral sanctions” to target banking or the defence industries, Obama says.

“We are keeping in reserve additional steps that we could take should the situation escalate further,” he added.

According to him, the sanctions that are to be announced today will hit individuals and companies. High tech exports to Russia will also be targeted.

The US president emphasised Washington had no intentions to impose sanctions against Vladimir Putin.

The White House sources of The New York Times said earlier that the new sanctions would affect Igor Sechin and Alexey Miller. However, Obama didn't mention particular names at the press conference in Philippines.

The first US sanctions hit a number of Vladimir Putin cronies, members of the government, the State Duma and the Federation Council, high-ranking officials and officials of the Republic of Crimea.
