Belarusians picketed UN headquarters in New York

The event’s participants protested against the construction of the nuclear power plant in Belarus.

Several dozen people gathered opposite the UN General Assembly building in order to yet again turn international community’s attention to the Chernobyl tragedy, and also remind that right now the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Astraviec is in full swing in Belarus, which has been already dubbed the “second Chernobyl” by many, BelaPAN reports.

The chairman of the Belarusian-American Association ‘Pahonia’ Vital Zajko reminded of the scale of the Chernobyl catastrophe and also how the Soviet leadership intentionally concealed for a long time the real consequences of the accident.

In Zajko’s opinion, the incumbent Belarusian authorities proceed with the Soviet times traditions and do not provide the population with full information, which results in thousands people still living in the contaminated territories.

As to the issue of the construction of a new nuclear power plant in the territory of Belarus, he pointed out that contrary to the stated goal of decreasing the energy dependence on Russia, the project is being implemented for Russian money, with the use of Russian technologies and the involvement of Russian engineers and builders.
