European Students demand release of Dashkevich and other political prisoners

The European Democrat Students (EDS) demand release of the Young Front member.

Zmitser Dashkevich, the leader of EDS’ member organisation Young Front Belarus, has been detained and convicted arbitrarily by the Belarusian regime to 25 days in custody.

“We strongly condemn the detention of Zmitser and other Belarusians opposing Lukashenka and his regime!” explains Eva Majewski, Chairwoman of European Democrat Students (EDS), the official student organisation of European People’s Party.

“Lukashenka fears the citizens of Belarus, he is afraid of them speaking up. Therefore, he detains critics in order to present a picture of his country to the world which does not depict reality.

The acts of detention in light of the World Ice Hockey Championship must be pointed out. We cannot accept them in the international community and call for the immediate release of Zmitser.

Freedom of speech is a human right and must be tolerated. Violating these human rights and attempting to create an illusion of the countries’ condition will not result in an increased international recognition of the dictatorship,” the statement reads.

Besides, the EDS urges the international community to underpin the pressure on the regime and impose travel bans to those responsible for crackdown on the opposition.
