Zhirinovsky demands to dam up Dnepr near Smolensk

The controversial leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia has offered to divert the course of the Dnieper.

Such a proposal was made by Vladimir Zhirinovsky on May 15 during his visit to Smolensk. The city is situated in the headwaters of the Dnieper. Then the river flows through the territory of Belarus and Ukraine. A member of the LDPR Alexei Ostrovsky is the governor of this city for two years.

The leader of the LDPR who is known by his outrageous statements, while standing at the bank of the river in Smolensk offered to leave Ukraine without water by diverting the Dnieper River’s waters to the Don or Desna Rivers. As said by him, Moscow scientific institutions were already engaged in development of this project, Komsomolskaya Pravda writes.

The governor of Smolensk region has stated that he would support the urgent implementation of the idea in case the government of Russia approves the decision.

The length of the river at the territory of Belarus is 595 kilometres.
