Bialiatski spends 1000th day of imprisonment at hospital

Political prisoner and head of Viasna human rights centre has been behind bars for 1000 days.

The political prisoner's wife Natallia Pinchuk reminded Radio Racyja about the date.

“The date is rather sad. We also counted how many days he has lived. It's about 18,800. He has been in rather strict conditions for one thousand out of 18 thousand days. As for new from Ales, it's sometimes difficult to get exact information. He usually says he is okay. But I worry, because I understand he doesn't want to upset me and tell me the details about his live and health. His health is what worries me most. Confinement conditions are rather hard there.

He works 6 days a week. Unfortunately, I receive information about his health from indirect sources. I know he is now at hospital with food poisoning. The documents, which I obtained from the correctional facility earlier, show he has problems with blood pressure, though it had been normal before. It's obvious they appeared in prison. We can recall Mikalai Statkevich, who hadn't had normal blood pressure before imprisonment, but media report this year he has problems with it now. It worries me and all relatives of the political prisoners. We worry about their current state of health and their future,” she noted.

Ales Bialiatski serves his term in correctional facility No. in Babruisk. On November 24, 2011, he was found guilty of tax evasion on a large scale and sentenced to 4.5 years in a medium security correctional facility and confiscation of property. The ground for the prosecution was his bank accounts in Lithuania and Poland. The court ignored the fact that he had spent the money on the accounts on human rights activity.
