16

Firefighters have been extinguishing a fire at a former tyre dump for the second day.

As charter97.org reported earlier, waste tyres were set ablaze at the rubbish dump near the village of Babina-1 yesterday evening. Plumes of smoke could be seen in the Babruisk and the nearby villages.

The press service of the Emergency Ministry reported about a fire covering an area of about 400 square metres. According to later reports, the fire destroyed waste rubber on an area of 5,000 square metres.

Eyewitness Alexandr Solomatov sent photos and videos to charter97.org:

Firefighters continued to extinguish the fire on the morning of May 20, though it rained heavily at night.

“We have been working for about 15 hours,” Anatol Baranau, the head of the city emergency department, told a Vecherni Bobruisk correspondent on the phone. “The smouldering of rubber waste continues. About 40 people from our unit and 20 vehicles were sent to fight the fire.”

According to preliminary information, the waste tyre dump in Babino-1 is owned by a Minsk-based private company. Firefighters don't rule out the possibility of arson.
