Authorities thwart UCP congress

The party has been denied 15 premises for a congress.

Charter97.org has learnt it from Anatol Liabedzka, the leader of the United Civil Party (UCP).

“Fifteen companies refused to lease premises to us. We hoped for the MTZ Cultural Centre, which recently became the only place for meetings of opposition organisations. They agreed to lease the premises for the congress at 14:00 yesterday, after talks and consultations. But they said two hours later that the premises were busy. We regard it as an attempt to thwart the congress. If we don't hold it, the Ministry of Justice can start a procedure of closing down the party. We cannot carry out the congress in the open air, because we have less than 15 days to file an application,” Anatol Liabedzka said.

The politician noted the party would have the congress in any case.

“We will carry out the congress all the same. We'll have it in the street, near the MTZ Culture Centre or near our headquarters even if it will be classified as an unsanctioned event,” he said.
