Brest court considers activist’s appeal in three minutes

The appeal was denied.

On 5 May a sitting of Brest region court took place, which looked into the appeal of the former municipal council candidate Mikalaj Charnavus against the illegal actions of the chairman of Baranavichy-Zapadny consitutency number 21 Larysa Antonava, the human rights center Viasna reports.

The judge Andrej Aleshchanka took only three minutes in order to approve of the lower instance court on Mikalaj Charnavus’ case. The judge announced that the case was not in the court’s jurisdiction.

The thing is that the former municipal council runner Mikalaj Charnavus believes that the chairman of the constituency electoral commission number 21 Larysa Antonava violated the law, when she did not allow him to speak to the voters on Baranavichy radio.

- I think Charnavus’ rights were violated, while Brest region court simply dodged from considering Mikalaj Charnavus’ appeal in due order. The Constitution guarantees the citizens of the Republic of Belarus the right to appeal to court and be protected in court. That is why I believe that such a response is the court’s reluctance to objectively look into this quite simple case, - a Brest human rights activist Uladzimir Vialichkin noted.

Mikalaj Charnavus intends to look for justice in Belarus’ higher juridical instances.
