G7 ready for new sanctions against Russia

The G7 countries are ready to impose new sanctions on the Russian authorities.

It will happen if Moscow continues to encroach on Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The topic of new sanctions was raised by White House Press Secretary Jay Carney at a briefing on Monday, Voice of America reports.

The US, the EU and G7 countries are ready to “impose further costs” on Russia if it “continues to engage in efforts to destabilize Ukraine”, Jay Carney said. He emphasised the White House was concerned about the events in Odessa.

“The events in Odessa dramatically underscore the need for an immediate deescalation of tensions in Ukraine,” the White House spokesman says.

The US, the EU and a number of partner countries imposed sanctions on Russia due to the illegal annexation of Crimea. The sanctions hit Russian officials and businessmen. The US added 18 Russian companies and banks to the sanction list.

US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said last week in Washington that the US and the EU prepared sectoral sanctions against Russia if it impeded the presidential election in Ukraine scheduled for May 25.
