Ukrainian defense minister: Terrorists could have been easily reduced to dust

The authorities do not want to draw in military confrontation civilians of Donbas, that is why they do not act so promptly.

It has been stated at a briefing in the Supreme Rada by Ukrainian Defence Minister Mikhail Koval, who commented on the issue of why an anti-terrorist operation is proceeding slowly, “Ukrainskaya Pravda” informs.

As said by the official, one of European ambassadors recently addressed him such a question, and the minister answered: “We have two variants. The first one is to employ heavy artillery, aviation, and reduce a town to dust, to hoist a yellow-blue flag and report that the mission had been performed. The second is to block saboteurs and terrorists gradually, and to prevent injuries and involvement of civilians in armed hostilities.”

“I asked the diplomat which variant he likes more, and he said our variant (chosen by Ukraine) suits him better,” Koval said.

The minister added that despited fatalities among Ukrainian soldiers, none of them expressed a desire to leave the place where the operation is held. As said by Koval, during the fights near Kramatorsk 2 commandos were killed, and 17 injured.

In his turn, the head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Valentin Nalivajchenko noted that “the local population is under a serious informational influence” on the territories where the anti-terrorist operation is held. He admitted that locals “do not trust Ukrainian security forces.”

“There are causalities among our troops as a result of firing for effect. Foreign military who had arrived from Russia and Crimea are used,” the SBU head said.
