Interior Affairs Ministry “knows nothing” about mass arrests of oppositionists

Police representatives say they are completely unaware of oppositionists’ arrests ahead of the Ice Hockey World Championship.

At the press-conference on May 6 the head of the law enforcement department of the Interior Ministry of Belarus Ivan Kubrakou could not give any information about preventive arrests of opposition activists ahead of Victory Day and the beginning of the Ice Hockey World Championship in Minsk, BelaPAN informs.

“I do not have information about measures of preventive detention,” the representative of the Interior Affairs Ministry said.

He noted however that “in their everyday work law enforcers on duty” detain persons who violate public order. “And it’s generally up to the court which measures are to be used against them,” Kubrakou added.

According to human rights activists, about 15 opposition activists are serving different terms of administrative arrest. They had been detained before and after Chernobyl Way march in Minsk (April 26), and also a few days ahead of the beginning of the World Championship. The opposition and human rights activists view that as preventive arrests.
