Belsat TV to stand another trial

Deputy chairman of the Supreme Court ordered to cancel the court decision that was delivered five months ago and reconsider the lawsuit against the TV channel.

The claim by owner of BELSATplus firm Andrei Beliakou is in focus. In January 2014, he asked the Supreme Court of Belarus to give him the exclusive right to use Belsat trademark and bar the TV channel from using it illegally, the press service of the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) reports.

According to Beliakou, his firm BELSATplus, which sells satellite and cable television equipment, suffers damages because its name sounds similar to Belsat TV founded by Polish TVP SA in 2006.

On January 27, the board of the Supreme Court dismissed the suit by Andrei Beliakou. Now, the deputy chairman of the Supreme Court demands to cancel the decision that was taken five months ago and send the suit against the TV channel for reconsideration.

The Presidium of the Supreme Council is expected to put a period to the suit at a hearing at 14:30 on June 24.

Mikhail Yanchuk, an official representative of Belsat TV in Belarus, says the Supreme Court sent a summons to him.

“I learnt from the chancellery that we would be given five minutes to present our arguments to the Presidium. After that, the judges will deliver the ruling,” Yanchuk said.
