65

A well-known human rights activist Ales Bialiatski has been released.

He told his wife Natalya Pinchuk about that over the phone. She reported about that to charter97.org website.

Ales Bialiatski is on the way to Minsk now. At 3 p.m. he is to arrive from Babrujsk, where he served the sentence, to Institut Kultury railway station.

The leader of Viasna human rights centre has spent almost 3 years behind the bars. On November 24, 2011 the court found him guilty of tax evasion. He was sentenced to 4.5 years in high security penal colony and the confiscation of property. The reason for that were bank account in banks of Lithuania and Poland. The court ignored that the money from these bank accounts were used for the activities of the Viasna human rights center and the support of political prisoners.
