Passengers of Minsk metro to face tougher security checks

As many as 24 zones for the personal examination of passengers, examination of their luggage will be arranged at 14 stations of the Minsk metro system in September 2014.

The examination zones are being built at the stations Oktyabrskaya, Kupalovskaya, Ploshchad Pobedy, Ploshchad Lenina, Institut Kultury, Nemiga, Sportivnaya, Avtozavodskaya, Proletarskaya, Uruchye, Mogilevskaya, Kamennaya Gorka, Pushkinskaya, Ploshchad Yakuba Kolasa. The construction is part of Minsk's investment program for 2014 and is scheduled for completion in September.

The equipment that the examination zones will be fitted with will be state-of-the-art. For instance, the introscopes will be able to automatically detect explosives. The same kind of equipment is installed in the National Airport Minsk and in the metro systems of Yekaterinburg and Beijing. The metal detectors will detect metals at several levels, including at the footwear level.

As part of the second phase of the effort examination zones will be deployed at another four Minsk metro stations, namely Grushevka, Mikhalovo, Malinovka, and Petrovshchina.

According to the source, personal luggage of passengers will be examined by Minsk metro security inspectors in compliance with previously developed guidelines. Personal belongings and documents will be examined only in the presence of their owners. If passengers refuse to have their luggage examined, including by technical means, the security service officer will then advise the passengers to use other means of travel.

The effort to set up the examination zones is meant to detect and prevent metro passengers from carrying hazardous items as well as products, which free circulation in Belarus is restricted or forbidden.
