Lukashenka: Talks were not easy

Positions of the parties differed drastically.

Participants of the summit in the format the Customs Union – the EU – Ukraine agreed to make Minsk a venue for negotiations of the contact group on Ukraine, ITAR-TASS cites Lukashenka as saying after the Minsk summit.

“All supported the proposal of the president of Ukraine to make Minsk a regular venue for a dialogue of the contact group,” Lukashenka said. According to him, the participants of the meeting agreed that “a group of experts will prepare proposals by September 12 to resolve the concerns of the Customs Union over Ukraine’s association agreement with the EU”.

Lukashenka said the parties had “a serious discussion regarding the crisis in Ukraine”. “Of course, we'd like to see a breakthrough, concrete agreements, the start of a political dialogue between all parties concerned. But the very fact of the meeting is a success and a step in the right direction,” Lukashenka said.

The dictator stressed the “talks were not easy”. “Positions of the parties differed drastically, but all agreed that we need a dialogue,” Lukashenka noted. “All parties agreed on the need for the de-escalation of the situation, the release of hostages. It is crucial to prevent the humanitarian disaster,” he added.

The meeting involving the EU, Ukraine and the Eurasian Troika was held in Minsk on August 26.
