Warsaw's tallest building becomes white-red-white

The Palace of Culture and Science in the Polish capital was illuminated with the colours of the Belarusian flag.

The show was organised to mark the Day of Solidarity with Belarus.

The 230-metre building of the Palace of Culture and Science, the highest one in Warsaw and one of Europe's top 10 tallest skyscrapers, became white-red-white last night. Powerful spotlights illuminated 42 floors of the building with the colours of the Belarusian national flag, which was banned by the country's authorities, a charter97.org journalist reports.

Many people were taking photos and videos the palace.

The Solidarity Day is marked on August 4, the day of the arrest of Ales Bialiatski, the Vice President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the head of Viasna human rights centre, which was closed by the Belarusian authorities. Bialiatski was arrested in 2011. Representatives of civil society do not plan to stop marking the Solidarity Day even after Bialiatski's release.

“We will celebrate this day annually. Until the conditions of the civil society in Belarus will not change: until they stop putting to the prison people for human rights activities and until basic fundamental freedom are provided: freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and of association,” reads the Manifesto of International Day of Solidarity with civil society and human rights movement in Belarus.
