Kyrgyz media: Lukashenka awarded Bakiev with Friendship Order

The story of the Friendship Order award for the runaway president of Kyrgyzstan is weird.

On Tuesday, 5 August, internet-media of the Central Asian country spread a message saying that Lukashenka presented Kurmanbek Bakiev, who is hiding in Belarus, with a state award – the Order of Friendship.

As a proof the media give a scanned document with congratulations from Lukashenka and the photographs of the order certificate and order itself. The congratulations are dated on 1 August 2014 - Kurmanbek Bakiev’s birthday, when he turned 65.

Vesti.kg managed to learn that the primary source of this information was the media named Kabarlar. In the news piece the author refers to some media in Belarus that disseminated the message.

“The congratulations text shows that Aliaksandr Lukashenka is addressing Kyrgyzstan’s former president in a familiar way, which is a sign of a high level of trust and respect. By the way, Minsk only presents such awards to acting presidents”, - the media reports.

Within a couple hours the publication was re-published by several other news web-sites. At the same time, from what Vesti.kg managed to learn, the primary information about the award only appeared on the Kyrgyzstan internet segment. Its authenticity was not confirmed by the Belarus’ embassy in Bishkek either.

- We are not aware of such information, - says the first secretary of the embassy Mikhail Karachun. – This should be better verified with Kyrgyzstan’s MFA. If Kurmanbek Bakiev is a citizen of Belarus, then we are not authorized to follow the fate of each and every Belarusian citizen.
