Zmitser Dashkevich: St George ribbon in Belarus marks borders of “Russian world”

Belarusian streets will be freed from ribbons of Saint George and Russian flags.

The statement was made by Young Front co-head Zmitser Dashkevich.

“We see more and more frequently that some people distribute St George ribbons and Russian flags in different towns across Belarus,” the former political prisoner said. “I do not clearly understand the sense of this campaign. Why do certain forces impose flags of another state on the population of an independent state? But this approach cannot be understood only if we assume that Belarus and Russia are independent states with equal rights and powers in their interstate relations.

If certain political forces say that Belarus is only a conventionally independent state under the protectorate of the so called 'Russian world', the distribution of Russian flags becomes clear: people put visual borders of the 'Russian world' and thus the Russian Federation. Two years ago, we could take St George ribbons positively or at least neutrally, but today, they and Russian flags are seen as a claim to the independence of other states and associated with Russia's terror in eastern Ukraine.”

The Young Front leader said how the Stop Empire campaign would be held. It will focus on cars and pubic transport.

“I'd like to remind you that we have legal instruments: under road traffic rules, placing stickers and symbols on the windscreen is prohibited. We call on people to make requests to the Minsk road police asking to remove Russian symbols from cars' windscreens,” Zmitser Dashkevich said.
