Lithuania’s Prosecutor’s Office officially confirmed detention of Kanaplianik

Belarusian embassy employees in Vilnius met with the detainee.

The Office of Prosecutor General of Lithuania confirmed that on September 21 the head of the Minsk directorate of the Investigation Committee, Dzmitry Kanaplianik (Dmitry Konoplianik) was detained. Several tens of 9 mm Luger cartridges were found in his car, ru.delfi.lt informs.

“In the course of investigation related to the detention of Belarusian citizens on Sunday, several tens of cartridges were found in the Honda CR-V car belonging to them; the both suspects were identified. (…) While investigating the crime, additionally information was received that the citizen of Belarus is a high-ranking official of the law-enforcing agencies of this country,” the report of the prosecutor’s office reads.

The Prosecutor’s Office stresses that “the Embassy of Belarus in Vilnius was informed about the detention of the two citizens in accordance with the established procedure, and the request to meet the detainee was satisfied immediately.”

Dzmitry Kanaplianik is suspect in carrying cartridges. The citizen of Belarus is not allowed to leave the territory of Lithuania. The Prosecutor’s Office reports his and his wife’s documents have been seized.

For cartridges’ smuggling the Belarusian national faces a deprivation of freedom for a term from 3 to 10 years.
