EU officially postpones establishment of free trade zone with Ukraine

The delay of the establishment of a free trade area between the EU and Ukraine was approved by the EU Council without discussion.

The European Union has taken an official decision to delay the provisional application of the clauses of the Association Agreement regarding the establishment of a deep and comprehensive free trade area.

It is said in a press release of the EU Council, UNIAN's journalist reports from Brussels. The decision was taken without discussion at a meeting of the General Affairs Council.

“The Council will adopt, without discussion […] the

delay of the provisional application of the free-trade agreement with Ukraine,” the background note for the meeting says.

It was earlier reported that the trade provisions of the Agreement would be applied from November 1. Pia Hansen, a spokeswoman for the European Commission, said at a briefing in Brussels on September 26 that it was decided during the trilateral meeting between the EU, Russia and Ukraine on September 12 to delay the implementation of the Association Agreement's parts relating to the FTA. It was decided to postpone the implementation of free trade provisions until December 31, 2015. Hansen said the EU would not amend the Agreement.

Evropeiska Pravda earlier wrote that Russia would restrict Ukraine's access to the Russian market if Kyiv implemented any part of the free trade agreement with the EU.
