9 years in prison for text message about “bomb”

A man involved in a case over SMS-bombing in the Minsk metro was sentenced to 9 years in a medium security correctional facility.

The man was found guilty of violating part 2 of article 166, article 168, part 2 of article 343 and part 2 of article 340 of the Criminal Code of Belarus. He can appeal against the court decision, BelTA reports.

A resident of the Minsk region, 34, sent a text message from his mobile phone saying he had a bomb and wanted to explode it in the metro. The text message read: “I have a bomb, I am in the metro, where to explode, tell me activation code.”

The metro was closed for several hours during the special check, and the schedule of surface public transport was changed. The information about the explosive device appeared to be wrong. The suspect was detained. The damage of his crime is estimated at 90 million Belarusian rubles.

It was revealed during the investigation that the man committed other criminal crimes: raping a minor, sexual abuse of a child under 16, demonstrating pornography to a minor. Fourteen examinations, including three forensic psychiatric assessments, were carried out. According to experts, the man has psychiatric deviations and suffers from alcohol abuse.
