Statkevich's father receives letter with threats

The 88-year-old father of political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich received an anonymous letter with threats on September 8.

BelaPAN news agency learnt it from the politician's wife Maryna Adamovich.

“He found a letter in his mailbox with threats to him, Mikalai and me. They write Mikalai will be killed after the release,” Adamovich said.

She says she will consult with a lawyer on Tuesday and visits her father-in-law in Baranavichy, where he lives alone, to file a complaint to the police.

“I have no doubts about the answer from the police, but I think we should react to such terrible things,” the wife of the political prisoner said.

Mikalai Statkevich was a candidate in the 2010 presidential election. He was arrested after a mass protest rally against the rigged results of the presidential election on December 19. More than 700 protesters, including presidential candidates Andrei Sannikov, Uladzimir Niakliaeu, Ales Mikhalevich and members of their teams were arrested.

On May 26, 2011, Minsk's Partyzanski district court sentenced the politician to 6 years in a medium security correctional facility. Confinement conditions for Statkevich were strengthened in 2012. He was transferred from correctional facility No. 17 in Shklou to prison No. 4 in Mahilou.
