Lithuania maintains its principled stand on human rights violations in Belarus.

On September 8, Linas Linkevicius, Lithuanian Foreign Affairs Minister, had a meeting with Natallya Radzina, the editor-in-chief of charter97.org website.

Among the topics discussed at the meeting were the current situation in Belarus, the ongoing pressure on independent mass media, attempts of Belarusian authorities to block charter97.org website, crackdown on the civil society and arrests of opposition activists, the difficult conditions of detention facilities for political prisoners.

“It is alarming that recently the question of release of prisoners of conscience faded into insignificance, flirting with the dictatorship is taking place again, and I addressed the Foreign Minister of Lithuania with a request to pay special attention to the issue of release of political prisoners,” Natallya Radzina informed.

The situation in Ukraine and the role of Belarus in this conflict were discussed at the meeting as well.

According to Radzina, Lukashenka is trying to use this war in order to regain Western support for continuing his repressive policies.

Linas Linkevicius, Foreign Minister, assured the editor-in-chief of charter97.org, that Lithuania maintains a principled stand on human rights violations in our country, and the demands to release political prisoners are made during all the meetings with the official representatives of Belarus.
