Obama and Hollande: Sanctions against Russia should remain

The US President Barack Obama in a telephone conversation with his French counterpart François Hollande discussed the situation in eastern Ukraine.

As the White House reports, the Presidents expressed the need not to lift sanctions against Russia in case of non-implementation of Minsk agreements, Lenta.ru reports.

Besides, the Presidents agreed on the importance of providing additional financial support to the Ukrainian Government.

The two leaders discussed the current status of the investigation of terrorist attacks in Paris on January 7 and 8. Obama confirmed the US would provide any assistance that the French government would require.

In addition, Obama and Hollande told about the situation in Nigeria, and agreed to cooperate with other members of the international community to help Nigeria to hold credible and peaceful elections and to support the strategy to combat the "Boko Haram".

The two leaders also discussed the status of ongoing negotiations with Iran and recent events in Palestinian-Israeli relations.

In 2014 relations between Russia and the West deteriorated due to the situation in eastern Ukraine and annexed Crimea. In late July the European Union and the United States took actions against a number of sectors of the Russian economy.
