Lech Walesa: Putin doomed to failure

President of Russia Vladimir Putin has no chances to win the confrontation with the free democratic West.

The statement was made by first president of post-communist Poland and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Walesa in an interview with TVN Biznes i Swiat, Union reports.

“This is the struggle of another epoch that is doomed to failure. I have no doubts that democracy and freedom will win,” Lech Walesa stressed.

The former president and leader of the independent trade union movement Solidarity, which led to the fall of the communist regime in Poland, says that Vladimir Putin remains in power only due to the “enemy philosophy”.

According to him, Russians are kept in fear of an external threat. This is the foundation of the regime, but this situation cannot last forever amid a decline in the standards of living of ordinary people and the problem of oligarchs.

“They will suffer for some time, but they will beginning to lose a lot and thus will have to take a decision. We can guess how this decision will look like. It cannot last for long,” Lech Walesa said.

“Even stronger empires fell. No one thought communism could be defeated,” he added.

Lech Walesa emphasised the need of the common position of the West and support to Ukraine in its struggle against Russia's aggression, noting that Vladimir Putin defied the civilised world.

“Of course, we won't begin a nuclear war, but we can organise things so that everybody will do something to make Putin choose the right direction,” Lech Walesa said and called to provide all kinds of aid to Ukrainians.
