Latvian Defence Ministry: Display of military force by Russian army causes concerns

Activities of the Russian troops near the borders of Latvia undermine confidence and promote tensions between the two countries.

This statement has been made Latvian Minister of Defence Raimonds after the meeting with the Ambassador of Russia to Latvia Alexander Veshnyakov on Thursday, en.DELFI.lv informs.

The politicians met to discuss Russia's increased military activities near Latvia’s borders. As said by Raimonds Vejonis, the increasing military actions of the Russian army near Latvia’s frontiers are incomprehensible and cause concerns. “In the context of events in Ukraine, Russia’s military activities are causing concerns,” Mr Vejonis said.

“That is why I asked the ambassador to explain the reasons for the maneuvers of ships and aircraft a few kilometers from our borders. If that is not explained, a question arises – what message it carries for Latvia? Is this a demonstration of Russia’s might?” – he asked.

The Minister has also stressed that Latvia is interested in building a constructive dialogue and cooperation with Russia. “We are for good neighborly relations with Russia,” the minister said.
