The authorities are using compulsory labour of prisoners in penal colonies almost for free.

Such a conclusion could be made from the income certificate received by the former political prisoner Ales Bialiatski while he was serving his term. The human rights activist published it on his Facebook account.

According to the document, Ales Bialiatski, who was working for 7 hours 6 days a week, “earned” Br146,413 over 8 months. It means that he received average 70,000 per month, which is about $9 according to the exchange rate of 2013.

As said by the political prisoner, after money for food were deducted, “a dollar and a half or two dollars” were received by him.

The head of “Viasna” human rights centre, Vice President of the International Federation for Human Rights Ales Bialitski was released on June 21 as a result of the amnesty. He spent almost three years in the colony on framed-up charges. Over these years the human rights activist has become one of the best known political prisoners of the world.
