No reforms under dictator's rule

Belarus is not ready to significantly change the economic development model, the dictator says.

“The model we have been pursuing so far will not be abandoned. We called it a socially-oriented development model, where a human being is all-important. I will stick to it as long as I am president,” Lukashenka said at the press conference in Minsk on January 29.

“We cannot change our course drastically, especially when it comes to the state with the 10-million population. We do not see grounds for such changes,” he added.

He noted that there are not many economic models in the world, but not all of them are suitable for Belarus.

“I can propose at least two very harsh models, which will be discussed in all corners of the world. But I warn that you will break down. If I propose you the most effective American model, streets will be filled with militants, members of the fifth column. People from everywhere will come to us and teach how to organise Maidans. But what is the most important is that people will be hungry and unemployed,” the dictator said.

“Shock therapy is not acceptable for us,” he stressed.
