General Hryb: Belarusian Police Unable To Pacify Bully

A drug addict was terrorizing residents of the district center almost for half a day, and the police managed to detain the man only a few hours later. Why?

A video of "Svetlahorsk terrorist" has instantly become a hit on Youtube.

It shows the man shouting something from the window of his apartment, and then smashing the windows and throwing things and a TV set out the window, and after that threating to commit suicide.

After the police and rescuers arrived, residents of the building were evacuated, as there was a smell of gas out of the hooligan’s apartment. However, the security officials couldn’t manage to get into the room, as the man said he was HIV positive.

After that the riot police arrived to the house and began to elaborate a plan of an assault. As a result, the hooligan was stunned by stun grenades and detained a few hours after the incident began.

Notably, local residents expressed their dissatisfaction over the work of the policemen, because they had reported on the disturbing neighbor a long time before, but no action had been taken. Moreover, it seemed to the residents the security forces acted slowly and leisurely, while there was a fire in the house.

Why do Belarusian police act so fearlessly and decisively during political rallies has difficulties when detaining a hooligan?

— The fact is that now law enforcers are trained to defend the existing power in the first place – a retired police Lieutenant General Miachyslau Hryb said in a comment to "Salidarnasts". – And as they think it is threatened by all the dissenters and discontented, they work and get prepared in this direction.

According to the source, people are not used to resist during political events, so the security forces have learned to stop such events easily.

— And when a man threatens by taking a hostage, or destruction of property in a socially dangerous way, for instance, by a fire, our law enforcement agencies are not used to such emergecies. Therefore, we have such funny stories.

What concerns the work to counteract real threats, the police, unfortunately, is not yet ready for situations that are rare in Belarus, Miachyslau Hryb says.
